WALKING ALONGSIDE YOUTH - AN ONLINE ANXIETY COURSE
Session 3 Summary
HONOUR
the youth’s identity, experiences and family traditions
Honouring Identity, Experiences and Family Traditions
Session 3 addressed honouring the youth in your care by leading with your own longing to know who they are, where they come from, and what they have been through. Honouring the youth is the first step in developing a relationship in which they feel safe and seen and become receptive to your care. Approaching the relationship you have with a youth by honouring them helps you resist the common temptation to resort to problem-solving strategies, many of which fail with youth who have experienced trauma, leaving you frustrated.
Session 3 also provided Indigenous perspectives on preserving relationships to maintain life, as well as anxiety as being traditionally perceived as the gifts of a highly sensitive and empathic child, who required support and traditional mentoring.
'It's your path but you don't have to walk it alone.'
